Food Processing

With the recent introduction of Northern Gold Foods, Athena Donair, and Intravision Greens Niagara into Welland. Food Processing has become Welland’s newest and fastest growing business sector. With its superior land base, central location, multi-modal transportation network, and strong labour force, Niagara and more specifically Welland is in a position to take advantage of the many new markets and opportunities in an industry that continues to see growth. The Vineland Research and Innovation Centre, a Niagara community partner is a world-class research centre dedicated to horticultural science and innovation, making Niagara’s food processing sector leading edge.

Niagara College, through its Research & Innovation Division, supports collaborative research projects in Food Processing that involve product and process applied research, engineering design, technology development, product testing, proof of concept, and piloting and problem solving.

Health & Wellness

Welland’s health and wellness network has expanded immensely in recent years to keep up with the rapidly advancing pace of medical and health sciences. The recently completed state of the art Welland McMaster Family Health Team facility encompasses 11 Integrated Health Professionals including Nurses, Social Workers, Dietitian, Occupational Therapist and more. The health team strategically strives for creating a patient-centred experience, fostering leadership and collaboration, and inspiring excellence and learning.

The region of Niagara with its community partners are together helping the life sciences sector achieve its innovative potential by building a supportive business environment, connecting research and business communities, and marketing its world class strengths in the global marketplace. The Cairns Family and Bioscience Research Complex at Brock University contains numerous laboratories for Brock researchers, in addition to classrooms, and a business incubator. The facility is used to leverage Brock’s strengths in research and scientific discovery, piloting Niagara and beyond to the new knowledge economy.

Niagara College’s Research & Innovation Division also supports nearby small- and medium-sized businesses by allowing them access to the College’s adept faculty, students, and recent graduates, while exploring opportunities for innovation. Many businesses that have taken advantage of the College’s resources work within the Health and Wellness sector.

Manufacturing Base Welland is at the geographical centre of Niagara's diversified manufacturing base and supply chain network.

Welland's 25,000 strong labour force has ready-to-go experience and depth in precision machining, metal forming, electrical & connectivity, hydraulics and power distribution.

The region also excels in advanced manufacturing, aerospace, shipbuilding, logistics, transportation equipment and primary metal manufacturing. Welland is also ideally situated to supply Canadian, American and international markets with JIT manufacturing and preclearance border programs to speed the flow of traffic across the border.

Welland also has easy access to world-class automotive research centres at Niagara College, McMaster University, the University of Waterloo and the University of Windsor.
