Completing the new community boathouse facility at the Lincoln Street Docks is a big step forward in showcasing what Welland has to offer through its recreational canal, says Richard Dalton.
“I’m looking forward to it,” said the city’s manager of recreation and culture. “The initial concept was to take what we have in the northern part of the city that is unique and special and move it to a more centralized location that is easier to see by those passing by.”
Dalton said the boat rental program — it has double kayaks, standup paddleboards, single kayaks and six pedal boats — at the community boathouse was well-known and popular. The move to a more accessible location should see an increase in recreational tourism on the city’s man-made waterfront.
“With the swimming docks and other projects on the drawing board, this is a big step forward in the variety of things we have to offer. People will notice and see what the waterway is capable of bringing to the city.”
In early August, work on the site, to eventually be renamed Welland Rotary Park, began with land being cleared, and water, sewer and electrical servicing started.
The new boathouse will contain office space on the upper bank of the recreational canal. The rental program will be on the lower bank and will hold 12 double kayaks, 40 standup paddleboards, 30 single kayaks, six pedal boats, 12 canoes, 150 life-jackets and 90 paddles.
Male and female change rooms and an accessible washroom are also part of the site.
Shipping containers, which make up the boathouse and rental program, were recently put in place. Friday workers were pouring concrete for a pathway connecting the two buildings.
“The pathway is being worked on, and landscaping has to be completed,” said Dalton, adding decking material will be installed along the shoreline and separate docks for rental program access.
He said they want to keep a split between the rental program and the area people use for swimming and enjoying the waterway.
“We’re looking at having everything wrapped up by the end of the month … but it could be earlier. We always leave a buffer in case any last-minute things pop up.”
While the community boathouse will be complete this year, the rental program won’t be running, due to the time of year and the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It won’t be a functioning site but will be ready for the May long weekend next year.
