A 98-unit apartment building coming to the north end of Welland is a “great investment in the city” that is rather necessary, says Ward 4 Coun. Bryan Green.

Ground was broken Wednesday on Lancaster Park, a private build being undertaken by Guelph-based SkyDev, part of Skyline Group of Companies, according to a news release from the developer.

Artistic renderings of the complex show it will sit nine storeys high. The mid-rise complex with high-end, condo-style rental suites will be built on Lancaster Drive next to Doral Tower, also managed by SkyDev.

It is slated for occupancy in spring 2022.

Jack Tosta, the City of Welland’s chief building official, said the project has a construction cost of $20 million.

It will bring much-needed rental housing stock to the city, which is currently facing a low vacancy rate of 2.8 per cent, according to the developer’s release.

Green welcomes the project for that same reason.

“We have a real need for rental stock, so 98 units certainly goes a long way to address those needs,” he said Friday, adding the private investment will also lead to people being employed by its construction.
