Fusion and homestyle Indian food will be on the menu of a new restaurant with a view of Welland Recreational Canal and International Flatwater Centre that should be open just in time for the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games.

It’s the first phase for Welland’s NB Distillers’ new distillery off Shaw Street, just west of the flatwater centre and Empire Sportsplex.

Distillery owner Neeraj Bakshi said he’s close to applying for building permits to build the facility on 2.28 hectares of land declared surplus by the city in 2021.

“We plan to open the restaurant before the Canada Games, by the end of June or beginning of July. We may have the distillery ready by then as well,” he said recently from his retail store 1-36 Darte Dr.

Though he didn’t reveal all the details of the upcoming build, a banquet hall will be a component of the new facility.

As for the restaurant, Bakshi said in keeping with the release of his line of spirits, it will be Welland- and Niagara-themed, with local products.

“Our menu will be a mix fusion and well known Indian dishes made by Indian chefs, homestyle food.”

There will be items on the menu for people venturing over from the flatwater centre and food for those taking part in activities at the new sportsplex. Bakshi is also looking to serve construction workers as Empire Communities builds homes in Dain City.
