Three rural roads in Welland will be pulverized, graded, compacted and resurfaced after city council on Tuesday approved spending $390,707 on the work.

The roads include Buchner, between Highway 140 and the border of Niagara Falls; Pearson, between Buchner and Lyons Creek Road; and Yokom, between Pearson and the Niagara Falls border.

Niagara Falls-based Walker Construction Inc., the highest of two bidders, will undertake the work.

Sherri-Marie Millar, Welland’s infrastructure services director, said the weather- and temperature-dependent work will begin sometime this summer.

A report to council said surface treatment is a cost-effective alternative to hot mix asphalt and extends the lifetime of the road.

Millar said the city has a 10-year program for surface treated roads, cycling through as they reach the end of their decade long lifespan.

Though the successful contractor came in at $390,707, Welland had budgeted $540,000 for the project.

Ward 5 Coun. Graham Speck asked whether the city would include more area roads because all of the equipment will be in the area already.

“I don’t leave money on the table. We will maximize all of the approved funding,” said Millar.
