Welland is on pace to exceed last year’s numbers for building permits issued, and their value in new construction as the city continues to grow.

In the first two months of 2022, the city issued 94 building permits compared to 91 in 2021. From those permits, 62 housing units are underway, compared to 48 at the same time last year.

Planning and development services director Grant Munday said the total value of those permits so far is $17.2 million in construction compared to $14.8 million in 2021.

“These are generally slower times of the year and are not indicative of the amount of construction activity that occurs when the temperature gets warmer.”

While construction is underway in subdivisions across the city, Munday said projects are coming down the pipeline not yet factored in to figures and will be drawing building permits over the year.

One of those projects is the $55-million, 226-unit, five-storey, two-tower Upper Vista condominium project by Evertrust Development at 350 Prince Charles Dr.

“They just have a foundation permit right now,” said Munday.

He said Empire Communities expects to apply for 300 permits for homes in its Dain City East Subdivision off Forks Road.
