Welland’s Home of The Whopper has been completely transformed.

After being closed for two months while a $1.5-million renovation at Burger King on Niagara Street took place, the fast food restaurant near Seaway Mall opened about three weeks ago.

The building was completely gutted and “everything from the floor up” has been redone, said co-owner Anil Shahani, who has operated the restaurant with his wife Malika for the last seven years.

A new kitchen, washrooms, tables and stools in the indoor dining area, two patios, new windows and more are all part of the makeover at the restaurant, which Shahani estimates opened close to 30 years ago.

Everything was done “from scratch” after its former contents were torn down and disposed of.

The building’s roof and HVAC system has also been replaced.

The former version had a solarium-type seating area inside, but now there’s more room for customers.

“Appearance wise, it’s completely different,” he said about both the interior and exterior of the site.

“This is more of an open concept,” said Shahani, adding the previous setup was “too congested.”

Another patio has been added, moving up from just one it used to have.

All new lighting is affixed to the ceiling and is part of Burger King’s ‘pavilion’ layout model, the latest in the Burger King chain’s catalogue.

He said the renovation is part of locations everywhere being updated with a new look and feel.
