Frank Campion says Welland is always shooting to be No. 1, but he’s happy to see the Rose City ranked 15th in the nation among the top 25 best municipalities to live and work remotely.
Thursday, Maclean’s magazine released its best communities list, which ranked 415 communities across Canada.
The magazine said it looked toward “great living for people who don’t have to worry about finding a job within commuting distance” this year.
“I think it’s certainly a nice thing for the city of Welland,” the mayor said.
The magazine had nine categories it used to rank communities, including housing affordability, population growth, taxes, crime, weather, health, amenities, community and internet access.
Welland’s top feature was internet access, which, according to the magazine, eight people in a home would be able to work on a single connection.
“It’s conducive for people working from home,” said Campion, adding people from other areas can move to the city and not have to worry about commuting if their job allows working from home.
The mayor said people are coming to the city, with a population of 55,483, which is good for the local economy.
“It means there are more customers for local businesses and more businesses opening.”
The city’s second feature was health, which looked at how many specialists were in the area per 100,000 residents, whether there was a hospital nearby, and the number of doctors’ offices per 100,000 residents — there are 54.
“We’re a healthy community. No one ever has enough doctors, but we have enough to keep things going,” said the mayor.
Welland’s third feature was amenities.
“We excel in amenities. It’s one of the reasons people come here,” said Campion, adding there are parks and trails across the city for residents and visitors alike to use.
One amenity unique to the city is the recreational canal, which stretches from the southern border at Port Colborne north to the Thorold border.
The former canal runs through the middle of the city and is home to Welland International Flatwater Centre and a new community boathouse, which rents out canoes, kayaks and standup paddleboards at Welland Rotary Park.
Campion said he’s happy with the city’s ranking on the list.
“I think the community should be happy about it,” said the mayor, adding he believes sometimes residents overlook some of the great things in Welland.
Niagara Falls ranked 24th on the list of the top 25 best municipalities to live and work remotely.
In the list of the 415 municipalities ranked by the magazine, St. Catharines was 32nd, Fort Erie 67th, Niagara-on-the-Lake 76th, Port Colborne 84th, Thorold 148th, Lincoln 156th, Grimsby 239th, Pelham 334th, and West Lincoln 337th. Only Wainfleet was not on the list.
