Marc MacDonald is the City of Welland's new manager of corporate communications. SPECIAL TO TORSTAR

Social media, marketing, ensuring the city’s website is up to date and working with the mayor’s office, and economic development department will keep Marc MacDonald busy when he takes on the manager of corporate communications role in Welland later this month.

That’s in addition to internal and external communications duties.

“I’m looking forward to it … expanding into a bigger community, with bigger projects and a little bit more responsibility,” said MacDonald.

MacDonald is coming to Welland from the Town of Pelham, where he served as a communications specialist for the last four-and-a-half years.

He worked in communications at Brock University and is a journalism graduate who worked at the Fort Erie Times and also on the paper at Brock.

“Pelham was a great spot to get started in municipally. It gave me an understanding of how the machine of government really works.”

When he started in Pelham there was a loose framework for communications and in 2019, he created a corporate communications plan.

“It was a good foundational piece,” he said, adding the plan was well received and won an award.

MacDonald, who lives in St. Catharines with his wife and two children, starts in Welland on July 29, and said with a larger population and tax base, there’s a bigger crowd to get the city’s message out to.

“I’m excited to get started and tackle the challenges that come along.”

Asked what he’ll miss as he leaves Pelham, MacDonald said his coworkers.

“From senior management on down, it’s a dedicated and talented group of people that were always collaborating. They made going to work every day enjoyable,” said.
