The location of a future multi-use sports in Welland is a plot the city has long felt would be ideal for a recreational amenity, says the municipality’s head administrator.

Under construction since late spring, the project has a price tag of more than $3 million — covered by $2.75 million from Empire Communities and $300,000 from Canadian Tire Jumpstart.

The majority of the project being handled by Empire Communities is attached to the developer planning to build two massive residential developments in Dain City to the south of the sports park, which sits behind Welland International Flatwater Centre.

A splashpad, about 100 metres from the sports park, will be part of the project, which has a targeted opening of next May.

The money donated by Jumpstart will pay for the park being an “inclusive” facility, and create features such as sport and parasport court lines, contrasting colours to support visual impairment, double-wide benches for improved accessibility, wheelchair-accessible seating and tables.

The park will have courts for tennis, beach volleyball, pickleball and basketball, as well as a yoga-stretching area.

Asphalt being poured is the next major step, Welland chief administrative officer Steve Zorbas said Thursday, adding the project is “progressing well.”

“We’ve been discussing it for years here at the city,” he said.
