Welland Ward 4 Coun. Bryan Green is excited to see what will become of three properties in the city now that they’ve been granted funding to carry out environmental assessments.

The three include 450 Major St., 154 Riverside Dr. and Drew Street at Kline’s Avenue and were cited in a quarterly report to council on community improvement plan incentive applications.

“Some good brownfield lands that may get some attention,” said Green last week.

Owners of each property applied through the environmental study grant program under the city’s brownfield community improvement program for funding to carry out Phase 2 environmental site assessments on their lands.

Under the program, there’s a maximum eligible grant, with the city and Niagara Region splitting the costs 50/50.

“Where does the Region stand on this? I know they’ve been going back and forth and making changes. Is the regional portion going to be confirmed, or do we not know that?” Green asked.

Grant Munday, director of planning and development services, said regional council approved retaining community improvement plans until 2024.

“Regardless, these applications have come in before any changes to their (Niagara Region’s) programs,” said Munday.
