As the former Target building comes down at Seaway Mall, it brings great changes not only to the property but the city of Welland, too, says Mike Belcastro.

In its place will go a master-planned community offering various housing options, walking paths, multimodal transportation and smart technology.

Warbler Place Urban Village will sit on six hectares of land in the northeast corner of the mall proprty at 800 Niagara St., and will feature a private road network from Lancaster and Seaway drives.

Last month, a draft plan of vacant land condominium for the site to create 15 units, which function like blocks in subdivisions, was passed during a committee meeting and will come to council.

A report from city staff said those blocks will house townhouses and low-, mid- and highrise apartment buildings ranging from 16 to 22 storeys for approximately 1,300 housing units.

“We are so excited to see the project get started,” said Belcastro, the mall’s president, in a release.

During the demolition of the Target building, one of the first steps in servicing the land, the mall said there may be some inconveniences to patrons and employees, such as parking lot restrictions and loud noises.
